Avery 5161 in Canva, step by step

  1. Create a sheet-sized design

Canva works per design, not per label, so start with Create a design › Custom size 8.5 × 11 in, the full US Letter sheet that holds 20 Avery 5161 labels.

  2. Show rulers and guides

Turn on rulers and guides (under File or View settings, depending on your Canva version), then drag vertical guides from the ruler to the left label edges at 0.156 in, 4.344 in; zoom in to place them precisely (each label is 4 in wide).

  3. Add the row guides

Drag horizontal guides to the top label edges at 0.5 in, 1.5 in, 2.5 in … every 1 in … 9.5 in (each label is 1 in tall).

  4. Design inside the boxes

Keep text at least 0.063 in inside every 5161 label edge; Canva has no snap-to-label, so check each of the 20 copies against the guides.

  5. Export a print PDF

Download the 5161 sheet (Share › Download) as PDF Print with crop marks and bleed turned off, then print at 100 % (“Actual size”) on US Letter paper.

  6. Or lay out the sheet with LabelGrid

Text-only 5161 labels are quicker in the designer above: it places all 20 positions for you. Images on labels are part of LabelGrid Pro.

Worked example: 20 shelf labels on 5161

20 labels on Avery 5161 fit on one page of 20; for more, duplicate the finished page and make sure the guides at 0.156 in and 0.5 in are on every page.

In the LabelGrid designer the same 20 rows go into merge mode; the free version prints the first 20 (one full 5161 sheet) and Pro removes the limit. To reuse a part-used sheet, set the start position to the first empty label.

When 5161 labels print out of line in Canva

  • The 5161 page shrinks when printed from the browser tab: print the downloaded PDF from a PDF viewer at Actual size instead.
  • Designs sit a little off the 5161 die-cuts: snapping moved an element; zoom in and check it against the 0.156 in and 0.5 in guides.
  • If every 5161 label printed from Canva is off by the same amount, the printer feeds off-centre: add the measured offset to the 0.5 in top or 0.156 in side margin, or use the LabelGrid printer offset.
