The best sheet for binder spine labels
Labels and inserts for the spines of ring binders, so a shelf of binders can be read from across the room. Avery 89103 puts 8 labels on one US Letter sheet in 8 columns and 1 row, which is why it is the default for binder spine labels here.
Each label is 1″ (25.4 mm) wide and 11″ (279.4 mm) tall, with a 0″ (0 mm) top margin and a 1/4″ (6.4 mm) side margin on the sheet. The longest line of the preset, “Policies & procedures 2026”, has 26 characters; at 10 pt one label holds about 64 lines of 10 characters, at 8 pt about 80 lines of 13.
Compared with 89103: Avery 5366 has 21 % of the label area and 30 instead of 8 labels per sheet and Avery 5163 has 73 % of the label area and 10 instead of 8 labels per sheet. Pick the larger labels when your binders need bigger type, the smaller ones when you print many.

Tips for printing binder spine labels
- Measure the spine width of your binders: 1″ binders take 1″ inserts, 2″ binders 2″ inserts; a label that wraps onto the cover looks messy.
- Use large, bold text: spines are read from a distance and at an angle.
- A colour band per year or department makes a long shelf searchable.
- Inserts slide into the clear spine pocket and can be swapped; adhesive labels are for binders without pockets.
How many sheets for your binders

Frequently asked questions
What size are binder spine labels?
LabelGrid's default for binder spine labels is 1″ × 11″ (Avery 89103, 8 per sheet). Other sheets that fit: Avery 5366 at 2/3″ × 3 7/16″ and Avery 5163 at 2″ × 4″.
How many binder spine labels fit on one sheet?
8 on Avery 89103, 30 on Avery 5366 and 10 on Avery 5163. For 24 binders at 1 label each you need 3 sheets of Avery 89103.
Can every label on the sheet be different?
Yes. The preset repeats one design on every label, which suits binder spine labels. For different text on each label, switch to merge mode and paste one row per label; the free version prints one full sheet per list.
Why do my binder spine labels print out of line?
Check the print dialog first: “fit to page” or any scale other than 100 % shrinks the sheet, and the labels drift. Choose “Actual size” or 100 % scale, the right paper (US Letter) and no “fit to page”. If every label is off by the same amount, use the printer offset in the designer to nudge the whole sheet.
